Social Reading

Topic 3: Social reading  For years reading was a solitary activity, however it can be argued that reading and writing has always been a social activity (Stein, 2008).  But now, the rise of digital social reading practices has changed that completely. Social reading is about relationships, for example, between readers and writers but also readers with readers etc. Additionally, pure one-way reviews are unpopular and one of the reasons that traditional book reviews are giving way to bloggers, Goodreads and other mechanisms which provide a format for interaction. Throughout the years there has been a rise of digital book clubs like ‘Reese’s book club’ on Instagram and Oprah Winfrey’s book club but also websites like Goodreads where people can review and discuss the books. On these platforms people can also express their stance on what is being discussed. It could be argued, according to Kress that the word 'screen' has become a crucial word in the cultural, social, technological and economic landscape of communication.  Kress discusses different meanings of the word 'screen' and one of these was from the French word 'escran' meaning a screen set between one and a fire as sheltering from an intense heat, furthermore, the French form may derive itself from the Old High German ' skrank ', which seems to be also used in Sweden. In modern German, this means a barrier or a rail. This seems that there is a theme of protectiveness, in two different languages 'screen' has meant something that is protecting someone or something from potential harm. On the other hand, there is a second definition for the meaning 'screen', according to Kress...

Multimodality

Image
Multimodality Multimodality is a key aspect of creating meaning-making in digital communication, particularly for large companies like Armani but also smaller companies like Cardiff Council. Multimodality is very common and has been for many years and it is used in a variety of different ways as a concept of meaning-making. Has this been achieved in both of these webpages? According to Kress, an element placed in the middle is referred to as the central element when it has other elements around it. The central element of this webpage is the question 'What can we help you with?' Underneath are hyperlinks to certain categories and above are pictures in no particular order, just moving from left to right, but as the website is open to all, these may have more importance to certain people than others, depending on the individual. There is also a lot of high saturation colours on this website, as it needs to be welcoming to all yet not intimidating and easy to use. The pictures ha...
